Sri Lanka Athletics (SLA) has made plans to conduct a special selection trial on July 25 at the Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo to pick athletes for the World Junior Athletics Championships to be held in Nairobi, Kenya in two months.

SLA selects athletes for international and regional events based on the performances of the National Senior and Junior championships, but the athletic governing body of Sri Lanka has been forced to sacrifice its core events during the period of past 18 months due to the pandemic.

“As previously announced, it is not possible to schedule a date for the National Junior Athletics Championships due to the current situation in the country. However, SLA is planning to conduct a special selection trial next month to select the athletes for the World Junior event,” a statement issued by SLA said.

With heavy restrictions in place due to the pandemic, SLA will only include few selected events at the special selection trials. The events will be 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 100m and 110m hurdles, 400m hurdles, high jump, long jump, triple jump and javelin throw for both men and women.

The World Junior Athletics Championships, an event for athletes of the Under-20 age category, will be held from August 17 to 22 at the Nyayo Sports Complex in Nairobi.
