‘Tech-Liya’ to boost women in tech entrepreneurship

While technology is becoming the forefront of everything in today’s context there are no barriers for anyone to learn in the digital space. Anyone from anywhere can use the digital space to introduce new businesses and ideas to make money while not just sitting in one place, idling.

Women, especially after giving birth are either under pressure to stay home and look after the kids by the husband and family or decides on their own to be responsible for the kids as a stay-at-home mum. However with technology and flexibility of working from anywhere, gone are the days where women need to stay home and do nothing.

Ideamart for Women and Satynmag.com have come together to launch ‘Tech-Liya’, a concept that recognises and fosters women engaging in the digital and tech space. The launch event was held at the Dialog head office in Colombo on Tuesday.

This concept seeks to provide the expertise and knowledge needed to build a successful online business in the digital space, which will be done through training and mentoring and will culminate with an award ceremony featuring the most engaging and dynamic women owned digital businesses.

The objectives of ‘Tech-Liya’ is to create 50 female-owned digital businesses by 2020, select nurture and grow all potential women segments island-wide by discovering hidden ideas and talents, create a female digital economy, empower women technopreneurship, ensure women’s financial independence, increase women’s contribution to the country’s GDP and improve the technical skills of women.

Satyn Magazine, Founder and Editor, Nayomi Weerasooriya, at the event, said that women in the technology and digital space is a concept that is gaining tremendous ground globally. “Technology empowers women today to do their business better and seek new opportunities in building their business. Through the ‘Tech-Liya’ initiative we are pleased to combine our know-how with the tech capabilities and expertise of Ideamart for Women in introducing a new dimension for women in technology in Sri Lanka,” she added.

“This will be a unique platform for women to build a business online. Participation of women at all levels from those who have not started a business to those who have already started and are looking to reach the next level of growth, are encouraged to participate. ‘Tech-Liya’ winners will receive funding and marketing opportunities and will be known as certified for digital excellence in their business,” stated Ideamart for Women, Lead, Sammani Kusaladharma.
