The Matara police took into custody the mother and stepfather of a child who was brutally beaten by the man.

Police said the man resided in a flat in the vicinity of the Matara super market.

The child has been admitted to the Matara General Hospital and has undergone a surgery on her hand which was fractured in two places.

The arrests were made after police viewed horrifying video footage of the man unmercifully beating the child which was caught on CCTV cameras. The footage is now circulating on social media.

The suspects are to be produced in Court at a later date.
