Despite many Sri Lankan firms being involved in the production of footwear, certain importers have commenced importing used shoes into the country.

While the local shoe industry is struggling to survive with the cost of production and price of raw material increasing, the import of cheap used shoes is adding to the burdens of local manufacturers.

The imported used shoe market is thriving, despite most of the shoes being badly in need of repair. One such location where these used imported shoes are sold is at Pettah.

Buyers are warned to get their ‘new shoes’ repaired by as they would otherwise give way.

The new used shoe trade provides avenues of income to cobblers who are often seated beside the ‘parana kades’
