A low-key Vesak celebration

Vesak was celebrated across the country amidst tight security deployment, especially at temples.

Armed officers of the tri-forces, police and dayaka committees appointed by the temple checked those entering temples. The turnout of pilgrims was low on Vesak day, but some crowds did visit temples the day after.

Temples and stupas were illuminated by decorative lights while pilgrims made offerings and participated in religious activities.

Vesak decorations at main roads and junctions were scaled down, with no pandals and Vesak lanterns erected as is usual. The crowds, usually seen moving about in the night taking in such captivating decorations, were not to be seen. The dansal offering refreshing drinks, ice cream and food to the people viewing Vesak decorations were absent too.

Though there were less decorations on the main streets, Vesak decorations in houses and housing schemes saw an increase. Byroads were decorated and houses were illuminated with Vesak lanterns, buckets and lights despite the lack of crowds to view them.
