25 years after death, his remains are sent for burial in war-free Lanka

The skeletal remains of a man whose last wish was that he be buried in Sri Lanka only if the conflict ended were transferred to Sri Lanka from Italy yesterday, 25 years after his death, Police said.

The man, who was originally from Chavakachcheri, had worked in the hotel trade in Italy. He died in 1994 at the age of 49. However, according to his family members, his last wish was that his remains should be buried in his village only if the war ended. The remains were received by his son and was due to be taken to Chavakachcheri yesterday.
