The Free Media Movement (FMM) has vehemently condemned President Maithripala Sirisena’s decision to appoint a new Board of Directors to activate the Sri Lanka Press Council (SLPC) Act, without considering the continuous appeals made by many Sri Lanka Media organisations, including the FMM, to abolish the SLPC Act.

“The FMM believes this decision to go against one of the election promises of the present President, by which he assured Media freedom,” FMM Convener C. Dodawatta and its Secretary Dileesha Abesundera stated in a press release.

The FMM said that, among the agreements that the FMM and many civil society organisations arrived at with President Sirisena, during the election, was to abolish the Press Council Act. A set of proposals to ensure that the Act is abolished too, were handed over to the President.

The FMM wowed to continue raising public awareness and its voice to expose the inappropriateness, inapplicability and backwardness of the SLPC Act, and continue the struggle against it, until it is abolished.
