Drought conditions still prevail in the Puttalam District in spite of scattered rains with the water levels in tanks and reservoirs remaining at a minimal level.

Iginimitiya Regional Irrigation Engineer Dilruk Hettiarachchi said that the Iginimitiya tank which can hold a capacity of upto 59000 acre feet now records only 7000 acre feet.

The Thabbowa tank which at full capacity can hold 15,400 acre feet too now records a drastically low 75 acre feet. Meanwhile the Rajanganaya tank which at full capacity holds 81,900 acre feet now records 31,660 acre feet.

Apart from these major tanks, smaller tanks and other waterholes have completely dried up.

Many farmers who have faced a drought condition for over a year are facing hard times with some giving up paddy cultivation and starting smaller crops.
