Speaker Karu Jayasuriya has decided to allocate another full day to debate the Steering committee report of the Constitutional Assembly as almost all parties in parliament have requested more time for their members to speak on it.

It will be the fifth day of the debate on the constitution making process. Initially three days had been allocated for the debate but an additional day was granted last week while the final day of debate will be Wednesday.

The Speaker’s office said that there is a keen interest among members of all political parties to express their views during this debate, and a number of MPs have requested the Speaker to allocate sufficient time to them for this purpose.

The Speaker has said he appreciates the interest shown by all MPs and pointed out that it is their duty as a peoples’ representative to actively participate and voice an opinion in favour or against a very important matter related to the country.

All party leaders have so far taken part in the debate with a high level of participation by all political party members too.

Meanwhile Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera will present his Budget to parliament on Thursday (November 9) at 3.00 p.m.

The budget debate will commence the next day and continue till December 9.
