Bookworms, don’t miss the 11-day ‘Big Bad Wolf Book Sale’
Many Sri Lankan book lovers have had the unfortunate experience of rushing to get to a book sale just before it closes, often not making it in time. The ‘Big Bad Wolf Book Sale’ this month offers bookworms the chance to enjoy a 11-day sale of high quality books at reduced prices – open 24 hours a day.
The sale will bring in 30-40 containers of books, a choice of 20,000 English titles, some 1.5 million books on a discount of about 50%. The sale will operate in the same way throughout the 11 days, with the same books on offer whether you visit the sale at 4 p.m. or 4 a.m. There will be biographies, non-fiction and fiction, coffee table books, cookbooks, children’s books and educational books for children of all ages.
“Back home when we started there was no reading culture so we had to create an event which would attract children to attend so we organised the sale on the theme of the Big Bad Wolf,” explains Founder and Managing Director of Big Bad Wolf Books, Andrew Yap, a Malaysian national.
Partner of Big Bad Wolf Books Dipak Madhavan explains the goal of the organisation. “We operate on the basis of the quote ‘put the right book in the hands of a child and you will create a leader’,” he says, adding that they never expected the sale to gain the popularity it now enjoys.
Director of ProRead Lanka (Pvt) Ltd. Nishan Wasalathanthri saw some of the arrangements being made for a previous sale and decided that it was a great event to bring to Sri Lanka. “Ape rate daruwanta apita denna puluwan adyapanaya pamanai (we can only give the children of our nation a good education)”, he stated. The event is supported by the Ministry of Education and organizers feel that the event has potential as an annual event in Sri Lanka.
The Big Bad Wolf book sale will be held from October 5 – 15 at the Sri Lanka Exhibition and Convention Centre (SLECC) and is open all day and night.
