The Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation (SLVF) is to conduct a Volleyball National Convention (VNC) on August 26 and 27 at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute.

The objective of this conference is to elaborate and plan for the future of the sport. All National and current players, coaches, referees, organisers, sponsors, media and district associations are to take part in this 2-day conference. This is the 3rd time that a VNC is being held in the island. The first was in 1984, when Charitha Ratwatte was President of the Volleyball Interim Committee. The second was in 2005, when Minister Dilan Perera was SLVF President.

The VNC is to be held under Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekera’s chairmanship, with 175 officials from the above mentioned sectors invited to attend this Convention. The purpose being solicit ideas from these officials and launch a 4-year plan to resurrect the Sport, plan out a strategy and develop it.

It is 100 years since Volleyball was introduced to Sri Lanka in 1916. Yet, Sri Lanka has been unable to go beyond the South Asian Games.

The last time Sri Lanka won a championship was in 1991 at the Colombo South Asian Federation Games (SAF), where the Women’s team won Gold. That was 16 years ago. To date, Sri Lanka has been unable to win such a medal.

The new Volleyball committee headed by Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya, is keen to know where Sri Lanka had gone wrong, and set up plans to correct the mistakes, to put the Sport on the right footing.

The main target is to bag the Men’s and Women’s Gold Medals at the 2019 SAG to be held in Bangladesh.
