An Agreement was signed between the Ministry of Education (MoE) and The British Council (TBC) on May 9, to jointly implement ‘Improving Teacher Education in Sri Lanka’ (iTESL) project, as a part of TBC’s Education reform programme TRANSFORM. The TRANSFORM programme’s main aim is to educate young people with the knowledge, skills, creativity and opportunities to contribute to the social and economic development of Sri Lanka.

Through the iTESL programme, TBC will deliver 90 training courses for 1,800 teacher educators from the National Colleges of Education, the Teacher Training Colleges, the Teacher Centres, the Regional English Support Centres, the regional NIE centres and the Provincial and Zonal Educational Offices.

Mentor training will be provided to 5,500 In Service Advisors (IAS) in 260 training courses. The IASs oversee teaching delivery in their subject and geographic areas.
