The Ministry of Education (MoE) will provide a relief package next week for students who were severely affected by the recent floods and landslides. The Education Minister has directed Principals and the Zonal Directors of Education (ZDE) to submit a report, this week, on such students. Accordingly, a special application form has been sent to Principals, ZDEs and Provincial Directors of Education to gather information about the affected students.

The Principals have been instructed to submit details of the affected students Grade-wise, to the MoE, after certification by the Grama Niladhari, the class teacher and the Principal. The package will include 3 school uniforms, a voucher for shoes to the maximum value of Rs 1,500 , a set of textbooks and exercise books, a school bag, stationery etc.

The MoE stated that around 22,000 students had been reported affected by the disaster. However, the relief package will be only for students who were severely affected. Education Minister, Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said the relief packages would be handed over directly to the affected students by the MoE.

Meanwhile, another programme has been organized in several affected areas to improve the mental status of students, with the assistance of counseling teachers, prefects and students of other schools. The programme will be held for 2-3 days in the areas, and will also include game sessions for the students.
