SLPI marks Press Freedom Day with panel discussion

The Sri Lanka Press Institute (SLPI) and the Free Media Movement jointly organised a panel discussion to mark World Press Freedom Day on May 3.
The day, proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in December 1993, following a UNESCO recommendation, is marked to defend media freedom worldwide.

The theme chosen for the SLPI-FMM discussion was ‘Media Freedom, Social Responsibility and Regulation’ with the focus being Sri Lanka. Media professionals, academics and government representatives took part at the discussions. The panel comprised Daily Express Editor Hana Ibrahim, National Media Institute Director Jagath Liyanarachchi, Sri Jayawardanapura University Senior Lecturer M.J.R. David and Derana tv News Director Shehan Baranage, and and Free Media Movement convener Seetha Ranjanee.
