Journalists as catalysts for peace

View(s):

At a World Press Freedom Day ceremony held on May 3 at the Cinnamon Garden Baptist Church, a fervent appeal was made for journalists to recommit themselves to the highest media ethics and to work for a peaceful, just and all inclusive society.

The call was made by Rev. Fr. Ebenezer Joseph, President of the National Christian Council which organised the event.  Representatives of Media groups, religious denominations and others attended the event held in Sinhala, Tamil and English. In the keynote message it was stressed that journalism needed to be seen not just as a job or a profession but as a vocation where journalists essentially played the role of being the voice of the voiceless people. If the media are free and fair, accurate and balanced in their news and feature writing they could play a key role in bringing about reconciliation, unity and lasting peace in Sri Lanka.
