E-motoring: Vehicle registration fully online

The Motor Traffic Department will soon introduce an online service known as ‘E-motoring’ enabling vehicle owners to carry out work related to registration through the system from the point of importing the vehicle, instead of calling over at the Department.

Motor Traffic Commissioner General Jagath Chandrasiri told the Sunday Times the system had already been put on trial at the Hambantota harbour where the registration process would be carried out online.

The photograph of the vehicle, registration numbers, engine capacity, seats and accessories will be included in the system on arrival, he explained.

The Commissioner said that when the vehicle was sold, the buyer would have to log into the system, fill in the details and send them online.

Mr. Chandrasiri said the move would help to reduce the number of people calling over at the Department, reduce fraudulent activities related to vehicle registration and delays.

He said Department staff would be stationed at the port to carryout the registration process.

The system would also help minimise under valuation of vehicles.

From next year, vehicle registration papers would include the photographs of the original owner and the persons buying the vehicle, he said.
