Beruwala: Anchored boats in harbour breeding mosquitos

A dengue eradication programme was launched by health officials in the Beruwala Municipality Division following 55 dengue cases being reported doe this month in the area.

Boats anchored in the Beruwala Fishing harbour were identified as a key mosquito breeding sites during the inspection carried out as part of the programme

“Thousands of mosquito larvae were found in water collected in these boats,” health officials said, adding that although the management of the Beruwala Fishing Harbour had earlier been informed about these boats no action had been taken.

Many of the dengue patients lived in the vicinity of the harbour and included fishermen boat repairmen  and fish sellers.

The programme was implemented by Kalutara PHI R.J. Sinhabahu, Beruwala PHI Gamini Samaratunga under the guidance of Beruwala MOH R.U. Wijesiri.
