Dengue mainly reported from densely populated areas of Colombo

Colombo district continues to be the most vulnerable to dengue with 1828 of the 6508 cases reported from around the country, being attributed to the district.

Commenting on the most recent three-day dengue eradication programme conducted by the CMC Chief Medical Officer Dr. Ruwan Wijayamuni said more than 2000 state and private institutions had been inspected.

He reiterated that of the 321 potential breeding places that were found during inspection legal action would be initiated against 29 state institutions, five residences and one private institution.

Dr. Wijayamuni aslo stressed that out of the 47 municipal wards in the district dengue was mostly rampant in areas where the population was dense and living conditions poor.

These areas included Modara, Mattakkuliya and Mahawatta; Wanathamulla and Dematagoda (bordering the Kolonnawa area); Kirula, Kirulapone and Narahenpita, Grandpass and Maligawatte.Meanwhile Kalubowila hospital director Dr. Asela Gunawardena told the Sunday Times that the hospital mainly saw cases from Dehiwala, Mount Lavinia, Ratmalana, Moratuwa and Kirulapone. He however said there was a drop in the number of patients- around 80- 90 this week compared to the first week of January where 110-120 patients were admitted.

Meanwhile Ratnapura Hospital Deputy Director Dr. Lalantha Rathnayake said 30 patients were being treated for dengue. In the first week of the month more than 60 patients were admitted diagnosed with dengue.

He said Elapatha, Kuruwita, Pelmadulla and the main city of Ratnapura were the most affected, but added that many of the patients who were receiving treatment were working and residing in Colombo but had returned to their hometown to seek treatment.

Meanwhile Galle reported 556 cases, Jaffna 395,Trincomalee 242, Kalmunai 125 and Kurunegala 256.
