The Customs Officers’ Trade Union has lodged a strong protest with Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake over a move to bring a former senior Customs officer back into service on contract basis a day after his retirement. The recruitment had been approved through a special Cabinet paper submitted by the Finance Minister.

The officer had retired on October 28 but had been hired on contract basis by Customs the following day and offered a new position, according to union sources. Earlier the customs Unions protested against re-recruitment of retired officers to service on the grounds that the serving officers will be affected.
