The nine year period between January 2006 to January 2015 was deadly for Sri Lankan journalists with 13 killed and 87 others assaulted during this period, Parliament was told yesterday.

One journalist, namely Prageeth Eknaligoda went missing, and 20 others were taken into custody during the same period, Law and Order and Southern Development Minister Sagala Ratnayake disclosed in response to a question raised by Kalutara District JVP MP Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa.

He said that four media institutions had been attacked five times during the same period.

He said evidence pertaining to these attacks has been destroyed completely and others tampered with that it was painstakingly slow to get the investigations into these opened.

“We have made progress into the investigations into the killing of Lasantha Wickrematunge and Eknaligoda and are investigating the others too,” he said.

The Minister added that legal action would be taken against those who destroyed the evidence. Several people who had been involved in destroying evidence pertaining to those incidents are already facing changers.
