Paintings, sketches and sculptures – Two rooms full of talent is the description for the 20th ‘Nawa Kalakaruwo’ ‘emerging young artist’ exhibition 2016 organised by the George Keyt Foundation. The exhibition that opened at the J.D.A. Perera Gallery Colombo 7 on August 1 ends today.

The exhibition features the work of 34 artists from all parts of the country who have emerged through several exhibitions and presentations by ‘young contemporaries’ and from the ‘Kala Pola’ of each year over several years.

Artist Renuka Dias says that she owes it to her mother who had encouraged her to draw from the time she was a child. One of her paintings of two leopards shows the love and care of a mother and child in a different perspective. Renuka had two other paintings displayed, one of the Last Supper and the other of an elephant. Her work attracted many, stopping to admire especially her interpretation of the Last Supper.

Displaying three contemporary portraits was a student from the University of the Visual Performing Arts,  Hashan C. Cooray. Describing the portraits he had done, Hashan said that he drew them according to his moods and thoughts but to each person the portrait may depict a different mood.

The many eye-catching paintings, sketches and sculptures are available for sale and can be collected today, the final day of the exhibition.
