It’s not unusual on some days to find a line of vehicles parked along the pavement outside the Lionel Wendt when you drive past Colombo’s Guildford Crescent. Whether it’s the unexaggerated queues in the morning or the busy office goer who rushes in at odd times, Dilrukshi Wijenayake and the crew of the Lionel Wendt are used to the excitement and constant comings and goings of theatre lovers when box plans open close to any big show.

The Administrative Secretary of the Lionel Wendt, Ms. Wijenayake — an ardent enthusiast of the arts herself, is always on the lookout for ways to improve and upgrade the management side of Colombo’s beloved theatre. The Wendt’s latest innovation is already a big hit. Inviting their patrons to a newly revamped website, the Lionel Wendt is now open to online ticket bookings with cash on delivery.

Tickets once purchased online will be delivered to your doorstep if you live in and around Colombo, including Ja-ela, Maharagama, Kaduwela etc.“We’re trying to help producers market their shows,” explains Ms. Wijenayake, while also making the ticket buying process that much easier for eager audiences. The website is also intended to help visual artists to market their exhibitions. Operating since July with the Combined Theatre Company’s run of “Playing Doctor” she finds that given the traffic snarls, more and more people prefer accessing the box plan via the website which also offers comprehensive blurbs of performances along with cast and director details. But the need to keep up with other websites that cater to online ticket purchasing and the practical benefits it offers producers, proved a sensible move from the traditional form of ticketing.

Those who still want the old-fashioned way, the box office is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. to 12 noon and 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. on weekends.
