Ratnams SC overcame Kirulapone United 4-1 in the Gold Cup Lawrence Fernando Memorial Challenge Trophy first semi-final and qualified for the final at the Baddegana Football Complex yesterday. The competition is being conducted by the Colombo Football League.  This tournament is one of the oldest competitions in the island. Leading eight teams affiliated to the Colombo Football League participated in the competition. They are: Ratnams SC, Old Bens SC, Kirulapona United SC, Sunny Mount SC, New Star Panadura SC, Old Wesleyites SC, Kolons SC and Eveready SC.

The second semi-final will be worked off today when Old Bens clash with New Star Panadura commencing at 4pm at the Baddegana Sports Complex.  Ratnams had no difficulty in defeating Kirulapona United by a massive margin of four goals to nil. The winners led 4-1 at the breather. Neither side was able to score in the second half. Mohammed Shiraz (2) scored the first two goals in the 10th and 43rd minutes.

The other goals was scored by Mohammed Shakir in the 30th minute and Mohammed Akil scored in the 37th minute. The only goal for Kirulapona United was scored in the 19th minute through M. Mohammed Shalik Khan.  Two weeks ago Kirulapone United toppled Ratnams SC by six goals five on penalty strokes when the game ended in a one all draw at normal time.  The date of the finals has still not been decided stated Balendra Anthony, Secretary of Colombo FL.- SP
