Vacate premises by end of this month: UDA to Ferguson Road temporary residents

The Urban Development Authority (UDA) has ordered the temporary residents of Ferguson Road Thotalanga to vacate the place by the end of this month. Defying threats from residents that they would stage a protest similar to one that brought Colombo traffic to a virtual halt on February 16, UDA Project Director, Brig. Ranjith Samarasinghe said the UDA, with police support, was conducting a survey to ascertain whether these people were the original residents of Somaliawatte and Kajimawatte on Ferguson Road.

Megapolis and Urban Development Ministry Secretary Nihal Rupesinghe said the problem was aggravated because there were at least three families living in each house and they all wanted a new house in government housing schemes.“The Government will not give them three houses. These extended families will not be considered separately. Only the original family will be given a house,” he said.
