An 11-year-old girl was the little trailblazer in the first-ever paediatric kidney transplant performed at the Lady Ridgeway Hospital (LRH) for Children in Colombo on Thursday morning.

The girl from the south had gone into renal failure following a severe infection and needed a transplant, the Sunday Times learns, and it was her mother’s kidney that was donated to her.

The operation lasting about 2½ hours was performed on Thursday (February 25) morning with varied medical specialties and nursing and minor staff working in tandem with the LRH’s nephrology team, a source said.

Unstinting support was extended by the administrators of the LRH headed by Director Dr. W.K Wickramasinghe and Health Ministry officials, the source added.

Since the early 2000s, paediatric kidney transplants in the state sector have been performed at the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital. However, this is the first time that a kidney transplant took place at the LRH. (KH)
