The Organisation of Professional Associations (OPA) is to make use of its ‘Think Tank’ to initiate innovative approaches towards resolving public interest matters. The organisation’s ‘Think Tank ‘comprising eminent experts in various fields is ready to extend their expertise to move the country towards innovative development path. This was disclosed by the newly inducted President, Prof. Rohana Kuruppu when he addressed the 35th OPA President’s Induction Ceremony held in Colombo recently. He noted that it is time that country recognises the professionals who have a role to play on behalf of the country.

The government must mobilize professionals in their development programmes He said adding that that they should be committed to the national growth and assist in the development Programme. Professionals should regain their past laurels and work to maintain that position, he emphasised.  Prof. Kuruppu mentioned that the OPA ‘Think Tank’ had a workshop on Chronic Kidney Disease of Unknown Etiology (CKDu) recently and has compiled a set of recommendations which will be passed on to the government for discussion and necessary action. A booklet titled ‘Role of Agriculture in Food Sovereignty and Poverty Eradication was launched in order to inform the public about the current situation in agriculture and future approaches to agriculture. Kuruppu said that during his tenure of office he will continue with the ‘Think Tank’ and generate innovative approaches to resolve peoples’ concerned matters and requested the professionals to assist him in this regard. .Professor Ravindra Fernando of Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo who was the Chief Guest explained the forensic medical investigation methods and outcomes. He outlined salient points about Rajiv Gandhi murder case and how forensic medicine can be useful in finding information for court decisions. He also briefed Father Mathew Peiris’s and Sathasivam’s cases to stress the importance of forensic medical investigation.
