With the term of the Presidential Commission to Investigate Complaints Regarding Missing Persons (PCICMP) ending next month, the commission has sought a meeting with President Maithripala Sirisena to discuss its activities. Commission’s Secretary, H.W. Gunadasa said a request would be made to President Sirisena to extend the term of the commission by six more months.

“We will brief the President on the progress made by the commission and it is up to the president to decide whether to extend its term or allow it to lapse,” he said. The commission headed by retired judge Maxwell Paranagama recently concluded its public sittings in Jaffna.

In September last year, the United Nations Human Rights Chief Zeid Al Hussein recommended that the Paranagama Commission should be disbanded and its cases transferred to a credible investigating body established in consultation with the families of the disappeared.
