Only CP MP to go it alone

The sole Communist Party member elected to parliament will remain as an independent member, party leader D.E.W. Gunasekara said yesterday. The CP contesting under the UPFA returned only one member — Chandrasiri Gajadeera from the Matara district.

Mr. Gunasekara said his party saw the UPFA as being non-functional now and therefore the CP member would function independently. “We will support some of the government proposals wherever it is necessary and at the same time oppose whenever it is required,” he said.

This is the first time since Independence that the LSSP, a once revered party, is left without a single seat in parliament.

The National Freedom Front (NFF) said it hoped to act as the ‘actual opposition’ in parliament with five of its members elected. NFF spokesman Mohamed Muzammil said the UPFA had failed to inform the NFF about the plans of the Alliance and therefore his party would work along with others in the opposition.
