Sri Lanka Cricket may get a boost with veteran cricketer and Ports and Aviation Minister Arjuna Ranatunga set to announce in two weeks about taking up chairmanship at the board.

The minister addressing the media on Wednesday said, “If I have time I will definitely come back as Sri Lanka Cricket Chairman,” adding that his decision would be made in two weeks time. His comments came on Wednesday morning just before Sri Lanka were eased out of the 2015 ICC World Cup, being hammered by South Africa in the quarter finals.

However what the Minister also failed to mention is that the top posts at the Cricket Board will be contested at an election that has been officially announced to be held on April 30. Approval for such an election has been given by Sports and Tourism Minister Naveen Dissanayake.
At least two other contenders including Arjuna’s brother Nishantha and incumbent Chairman Jayantha Dharmadasa have indicated their interest in contesting. Nominations are yet to be called for the contest.

Mr. Ranatunga noted that the selectors nor the renowned cricketers have contributed to the future of cricket in Sri Lanka by building confidence in the young ones to continue the game.

The minister said the selector’s committee must think of not just wining the match but also developing the game for the future.
“I am disheartened,” he said, expressing his views of Sri Lanka Cricket on Wednesday.
