Cabinet this week approved several proposals by Higher Education Minister S.B. Dissanayaka to improve facilities in higher education institutions in the country.

These include a proposal to procure new Medical equipment for the Medical Faculties of Rajarata and Eastern Universities and the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences of Peradeniya University.

These faculties were newly established and it is proposed to uplift their standards to the standards of other National Universities of the country, by providing them with the required equipment and accessories for teaching and learning activities, the Minister said in his proposal to Cabinet.

Cabinet also approved another proposal by Minister Dissanayaka for the relocation and development of Moratuwa University’s Institute of Technology, with a view to resolving issues between Moratuwa undergraduates and students of the Institute of Technology, established within Moratuwa University.

Plans are also afoot to develop the National Diploma Technology Programme, which enjoys higher national and international demand, to enable an increased student intake.

It is also proposed to accommodate students from the Technology stream, expected to enter universities from 2015, by implementing this project.

Cabinet also gave the go ahead to the Higher Education Minister to award the bids to the lowest evaluated responsive bidder, as recommended by the Standing Cabinet Appointed Procurement Committee (SCAPC) to provide Infrastructure Facilities to Universities to enable a hiked intake of students for 2015.

These will include the construction of a five-storied building for Lecture Halls, Reading Rooms and a Multipurpose Auditorium for Colombo University’s School of Computing.
