Explaining these trends, Singer Sri Lanka PLC Group CEO Asoka Pieris told the Business Times on the sidelines of the launch of Huawei Ascend P7 (the world’s thinnest smartphone) in Colombo this week, noted that the market for mobile phones in Sri Lanka is moving from buying ordinary feature phones to smartphones. The so called ‘Selfie’ photographs taken from smartphones have become a hit in social media. It has become a popular feature not only among the young generation of today but even heads of states who are very interested in taking those types of photographs, said Mr. Peiris.

More than 5,000 of the Huawei Honor 3C smartphone launched recently in Sri Lanka were sold in less than a month. The Huawei brand is ranked No. 2 in Sri Lanka and No. 3 worldwide. There is enormous potential for the Huawei Ascend P7 smartphone in Sri Lanka due to the phone being world’s thinnest phone, the 4G LTE and the selfie feature, added Mr. Peiris. Today mobile phones are purchased based on the ease of access to social media and the applications which supports them. The camera in a smartphone plays a big role in getting the message via social media to friends and families. In most smartphones the panorama feature of a photograph could only be taken from the rear camera. In the Huawei Ascend P7 the panorama feature could be taken even from the front camera which is a unique feature, than in any other smartphones, Mike MacDonalds, Huawei Group Chief Technology Officer Southeast Asia told the Business Times. The Huawei Ascend P7 has a 5 inch full high definition display, industry leading 8 megapixels front camera and 13 megapixels rear camera. Also this smartphone has set the record as the thinnest 4G LTE smartphone in the market with 6.5 mm thickness. The mobile phone costs Rs. 69,999 and will be available at all Singer outlets island wide including Singer Mega, Singer Plus, and Sisil World stores.
