The recently-concluded Network Operations Centre (NOC) meeting, for the Lanka Education and Research Network (LEARN), formed a “working group to steer and support deployment of technologies such as [Voice Over IP (VOIP)] and IPv6 across all member institutes of LEARN”. Further, the event was held in partnership with the University of Peradeniya’s Information Technology Centre, with DMS Electronics and HP sponsoring.

At the same time, a “Campus Network Design” workshop held in conjunction with the LEARN meeting, and mainly for systems engineers and systems administrators working at LEARN member institutions, featured education on “best practices for campus wide network optimisation”. Additionally, it also offered hands-on tutorials on configuring networking equipment for campus network design and optimisation for which LEARN provided the necessary equipment.

According to a statement, “LEARN currently interconnects all of the UGC funded state universities, a number of higher educational institutes under other ministries, the University Grants Commission, Ministry of Higher Education, and a number of national research institutions including the National Science Foundation”.

“Both LEARN and its members have taken the lead in embracing latest technologies such as Software Defined Networks (SDN) and Openflow in providing innovative services for their institutions”, commented Ricardo Senathirajah, Group Manager, Unified Communication Solutions, at DMS Electronics.
