A Supreme Buddhist Advisory Council to guide the Government on improving religious reconciliation is to be appointed by President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Buddha Sasana Ministry Secretary M.K.B. Dissanayaka said yesterday.

The 17-member council will include nominees from the Mahanayake Theras and its advice will be sought on resolving issues with other religions, disputes among Buddhist clergy and issues related to land disputes in temples, he said.

The secretary said the President would also consult the council in taking policy decisions relating to religious issues.“This will ensure that the views of the Mahanayake Theras will be expressed through this council,” he said.

The council including three representatives each from the Asgiriya, Malwatte, Ramannya and Amarapura Nikayas, would begin work within the next two weeks, Mr. Dissanayaka said.
