New members to the Public Service Commission (PSC), the term of which lapsed two weeks ago, will be named by President Mahinda Rajapaksa shortly, officials said.

The three-year term of the PSC ended on May 13. An official of the Public Administration Ministry said there is usually an interval of a few weeks between the lapsing of the term of the Commission and the appointment of a new one.

UPFA MP A.H.M.Azwer who is a member of the Parliamentary Council that confirms names of nominees to the different Commissions said that the President’s Office is expected to forward the names to the Council soon for its observations.

“We have appointed members of all other Commissions such as the Human Rights Commission and the Judicial Service Commission without any delay. The PSC too will be reconstituted soon,” he added.

Dr. Dayasiri Fernando served as a Commissioner of the PSC, first from 2006 to 2009 and was reappointed as its Chairman in 2011. It has eight other members.

It is likely some of them will be reappointed to the PSC.
