An eight year old boy died in a freak accident during the avurudu season, when a porcelain bowl fell on his head causing serious injuries to his neck area.
The boy, Adipa Shanka Mallikarachchi, had run into his mother while she was carrying a large porcelain bowl which slipped and fell on his head.
The accident occurred at the victim’s home in Pokunuwita, Horana last Saturday (19).

Giving evidence at the Colombo Coroner’s Court the boy’s father Kavinda Mallikarachchi said he had invited a few friends for lunch that day.“My wife was preparing the meal. She took this bowl outside to be washed. When she was returning to the kitchen, my son ran into her. The bowl fell on his head and broke into several pieces,” he recalled.

The child was rushed to the Horana Hospital but as his condition was critical, he was later transferred to the ICU of Colombo National Hospita where he succumbed to his injuries. Colombo JMO Dr. D. L. S. Senanayakewho conducted the post mortem ruled that death was caused by excessive bleeding caused by the broken porcelain bowl.
