Live telecast of Parliament proceedings to start next month: Speaker

The first hour of Parliament proceedings will be telecast live from next month, Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa announced this week.
He said the telecast, over a private cable network, which was suspended after a month of test transmission, would re-commence, but he would ensure that MPs strictly adhere to Standing Orders of Parliament during debates in the House.
“I will ensure Standing Orders are adhered to to the letter. Then everything will be alright,” the Speaker said on Friday, when UNP MP Ravi Karunanayak raised the issue of when the live telecast would re-commence.

The test transmission which ran for a month between November and December 2013, was suspended in January, following complaints by Government MPs that Opposition members were using the telecast to make false allegations against them to gain political mileage.
