Rajapaksa government sets up Kudu Balakaya for Lanka’s youth: Ranil
View(s):Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe on Friday said that, though the Rajapaksa regime promised to set up a ‘Nil Balakaya’ (Blue Force) for the youth of this country, it has instead formed a ‘Kudu Balakaya’ (Drug Force).
Mr Wickremesinghe addressing the Young Activists’ Meeting in Ranala, Kaduwela, said that the current regime is attempting to make the island a new hub for international drug dealing and make money out of it.
“Out of the 400 metric tons of worldwide drug production, 50 metric tons are produced and distributed by Myanmar, Thailand and Laos, alias the Golden Triangle, and the rest of the 350 metric tons by Afghanistan” he said.
He added that there is a market worth US$ 60 billion for illegal drugs in the United States and Europe, and the current regime here is trying to gain at least US$ 1 billion from the drug business.
“They have started to smuggle drugs from both Afghanistan and Southeast Asian countries, to distribute them to the USA and Europe from here, for the first time in our history,” he claimed.
He said that the Police have no power to enforce the law in the case of drug smuggling.
“As there was no action taken by the Government against the ethanol container and the drug smuggling, we submitted a ‘No-Confidence’ motion to Parliament against the Government,” added the Opposition leader.
“If the Government has no part in the racket, they should come forth with proof against the allegations of drug smuggling at the Parliament debate, with regard to the ‘No-Confidence’ motion,” he stressed.
