Registrar job: SLMC concerned over new criteria

View(s):

The Government has reportedly gazetted new criteria for the appointment of Registrar of Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) without disclosing its contents to the governing body of the Council.  “We have not seen the final version yet. We will have to wait and see what it contains once the document is made available to us” Prof. Carlo Fonseka, President of SLMC, told the Sunday Times.

SLMC, which regulates and monitors medical practitioners in the country, operates as an independent body. It had been discussing the criteria with the Health Ministry for the past few months and had sent comments and amendments to the ministry.  The ministry had not shared the final version of the criteria or discussed it with the SLMC, according to an SLMC source.

“The council has decided to communicate its opposition to Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena immediately. We have requested an urgent meeting with him”, the source said.  Deputy Health Minister Lalith Dissanayake said he was not aware of the contents of the gazette notification. Neither Minister Sirisena nor Ministry Secretary Nihal Jayathilaka was available for comment.
