Plight of elephants

The elephant is a majestic animal. In many ancient countries, the elephants is respected and used in religious events. The elephant, unlike other animals is very dignified. It is a herbivore and does not harm other animals in the jungle. Unfortunately in Sri Lanka, there is a conflict between man and elephants. Man has cut down forests and built villages and grown plants. When the elephants come into the villages to search for food, man kills the elephants using gun powder and electric fences.

Earlier in Sri Lanka there were over 7000 elephants and we exported them to other countries. But now the number of elephants has reduced and there are only 2000 elephants in Sri Lanka.  When wild elephants come into villages they destroy crops and houses because they are built in the elephants land. But man doesn’t understand the reason and kills the elephants.

So, precautions should be taken by the wildlife authorities, to prevent the killing of elephants. They can tell the villagers not to build in the elephants’ territory and not to fire gunshots and put up electric fences which will kill the elephants. Man should try to protect the elephants instead of killing them.
