Shakespeare Centre Sri Lanka is searching for a young girl who could play ‘Ophelia’ for its latest production, a film based on William Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet’.

Shakespeare Centre which had been promoting Shakespeare production in Sri Lanka for more than 20 years is to produce ‘Hamlet’ with leading cinema artistes including Jeewan Kumaratunga, Veena Jayakody. Rex Kodippili and Clitus Mendis.

“We interviewed nearly 100 girls but we could not find one that would suit ‘Ophelia’, the central character of the story,” playwright and director Gamini de Silva who was directing the film said.

The movie which is set as a musical tragedy needs a girl with a height of 5.7 feet and should be able to act, Mr. Silva said. Shakespeare Centre has been promoting Shakespearean productions by organizing theatre competition, speech, essay and quiz programmes.
