Laksala gears for big sales

Traditional handicraft shops in Colombo and the suburbs are putting their best goods on display to attract the large number of visitors expected for CHOGM including members from the British Royal family. Laksala, a leading handicraft store is keen to make use of the opportunity to promote their gift items with many outlets being renovated in the past few months and a new outlet opening in proximity to the Colombo National Museum.

Another Laksala outlet will be opened on November 13 at the former Jana Kala Kendraya in Bataramulla. The place will not only have traditional crafts but will also exhibit the traditional way of life with indigenous medical huts (Veda gedara) village settings recreated.

Laksala Chairman Anil Koswatta said while this project is part of the new attractions for CHOGM, the concept will be a permanent fixture. Meanwhile, employees of the Laksala branch near the Museum are getting ready to welcome the spouses of the visiting foreign dignitaries.

Branch manager, Upendra Angus said the new outlet has around 30,000 artifacts, ranging in price from Rs. 150 to one million rupees. Meanwhile it is business as usual for leading clothes store ODEL. Director Swendrini Wijesndera said, “We have already started our Christmas season sales and the Commonwealth meeting coincides with it.”

“The crowds arriving during the summit will appreciate our LUV SL gift collection that includes items such as local accessories, clothing and tokens that celebrate Sri Lankan culture.
