Artificial beaches to woo more tourists

An artificial 2km beach from the Galle Fort is to be set up within a year to provide an added attraction for tourists, a senior official said yesterday. The Rs. 600 million project will be carried out jointly by the Urban Development Authority (UDA) and the Navy, Coast Conservation chief Anil Premaratne said.

The artificial beach, a part of the Galle Urban Development Programme, would also have facilities such as entertainment, leisure, hospitality, children’s parks and marine attractions, he said. He said artificial beaches would also be set up in Kalutara, Weligama, Tangalle and Wellawatte.
