There comes a night every year in Colombo, where you can don a Stetson hat and cowboy boots and sing along to the twang of guitars. “Country Roads” is a fixture in many a country music loving Sri Lankan’s calendar. The brainchild of the Country Music Foundation (CMF) and organised by Feizal Samath and Jury Majid (both musicians as well) the show has enjoyed a successful run since 1988 raising funds for disadvantaged children. The show celebrated its 25th anniversary earlier this year and included performances by leading local and international artists.

Synonymous with this concert is the popular German band the Mavericks who have been performing at Country Roads for more than a decade. Next week the band known for their rousing performances will be in Sri Lanka with a series of independent shows at the invitation of Jetwing Hotels.

The Mavericks will be performing at Jetwing Lighthouse Galle on October 25 and at the Jetwing Blue Negombo from October 29 to 31. Colombo fans can catch them on Sunday, October 27 at “Country Hoedown” an evening of music, dance and games organised jointly by the CMF and Dutch Burgher Union from 7.30 p.m. onwards to midnight. The evening will also feature a brief performance by the Country Revival Band, a regular at the Country Roads concert.

The Mavericks comprise the charismatic Dirk Glaessner, leader on guitar/vocals; Stefan Sperling, lead guitar/vocals, Tobias Sauter, drums/vocals and Rainer Krebs, bass guitar/vocals. Dirk, on behalf of the others voiced their delight stating ““It is great to be back in Sri Lanka twice in a year.” They were last here in February for the 25th Country Roads show.
