To celebrate their 80th anniversary, the Sinhala Literary Society of Ladies’ College will present ‘Sakuntala’- the great Sanskrit poet Kalidasa’s play as a dance drama on Friday, October 25 at 7 p.m. at the Ladies’ College Hall.

Sakuntala is the poignant love story of King Dushyantha and the beautiful Sakuntala who grew up in the forest in a Rishi’s ashram. Sakuntala, the daughter of the sage Vishwamitra and the apsara Menaka was left in the hermitage of Rishi Kanva by Menaka. King Dushyantha while on a hunting expedition in the forest sees the beautiful maiden and falls in love with her but as in all romantic legends, the path of true love does not run smoothly. A curse placed by a rishi on Sakuntala leads the king to forget her but the story eventually ends happily.

The dance drama has been choreographed and directed by the school’s drama teacher Wasana Doolwala. The enthusiastic cast comprises 50 girls from the ages of 8 to 17. Skauntala will be the first production to be staged in the school’s newly air-conditioned hall and is also a farewell tribute to Principal Nirmali Wickremasinghe, who retires at the end of the year.

Tickets priced at Rs. 1,000 and Rs. 750 are available at the school office (9 a.m. to 1 p.m.)
