Ten-year-old Kiara and six-year-old Anya are both pupils of Ladies’ College, Colombo, where arts and crafts are greatly encouraged and students are free to explore and widen their horizons through projects and exhibitions. Kiara started painting at the Sapumal Foundation in 2006 under Aunty Noeline who first introduced her to the wonders of various forms of art.

A fun pastime: Anya and Kiara

Both sisters are now pupils of Rhuani Rambukwella at The Hardy Centre of Art.  One of Kiara‘s favourite pastimes is sketching on her sketch pad or anything else she can lay her hands on and she has produced a wide range of vibrant paintings. Anya has developed her own style of painting and also enjoys creating fun sculptures from clay. Both have inherited talent in art from their grandparents, the late Mohan and Shyami Dodanwella, who were both enthusiastic members of The Young Artists Group.

Shyami, who is the daughter of the late Alfreda de Silva, a leading journalist and poet of her time, has inspired her granddaughters by giving them a little studio in her home where they are free to indulge their interest in painting. Both girls have developed their artistic skills under the expert guidance of their teacher, Rhuani.

KIara and Anya are the great great- granddaughters of the late Sir Oliver Goonetilleke, our first Sri Lankan Governor General.

An exhibition of paintings  will be held at the Lionel Wendt from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on September 7 and 8
