Matale mass grave Commission of Inquiry shifts from BMICH to JRJ Centre
The venue for the sittings of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry appointed to probe the Matale mass graves will no longer be the BMICH, but is to be shifted to the J.R. Jayawardene Centre in Colombo.
Attempts to secure a room at the BMICH were thwarted after it was brought to the attention of the Commissioners that the venue is being prepared for November’s Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHGOM) in Colombo, the Sunday times learns.
The three-member Commission of Inquiry appointed by President Mahinda Rajapaksa in mid-June is likely to hold its first meeting in early August. It has already called for reports pertaining to the mass graves investigation, while the services of a State counsel too have been secured to assist the Commission.
Its members are retired Supreme Court Judge I.M. Imam, Ex Parliament Secretary General Dhammika Kithulgoda and retired High Court Judge Bandula Atapattu.
Several human skeletons were initially unearthed on November 26, 2012, whilst excavations were taking place in close proximity to the kitchen of the Matale General Hospital. Up to February 12, 2013, a total of around 155 human skeletons had been unearthed.
