A thirty-two-year old man was enjoying himself last Sunday afternoon while dancing at a wedding of a class mate, when a supposedly drunk guest allegedly barged into him and continued to do so several times. The incident led to an argument, which didn’t take more than two minutes according to Sujith Roshan, the victim. Other guests intervened to separate the two before a brawl started.
“I felt myself being dragged to a side of the hall when a strong arm from behind pinned me and the next thing I felt was a stinging pain in the middle of my face,” he said.

The strong arms belonged to former Mahara UNP organiser Thushara Hemachandra, and the pain he felt in the middle of his face was the injury he felt after the politico allegedly bit his nose in an attempt to end the brawl, Sujith said. Sujith said the politico had no reason to get involved in the incident and especially to bite his nose.

That was the first time that I met him and I haven’t even spoken to him. There was no reason for him to intervene so violently adding that the politico bit his nose very hard so that a part of it was hanging to one side, he said. His friends took the injured Sujith to Watupitiwela hospital where the torn nose required ten stitches. His wife, Thakshila who got to know about the incident at around 3.30 p.m. rushed to the hospital with a neighbour, almost fainting when she saw her husband lying covered in his own blood.

When the Sunday Times went to visit Sujith, he welcomed us with a humble smile into his half built house. While his six-year-old son played in a side of the room Sujith showed us his injured nose which was in plaster. “We are innocent people and these incidents always happen to us. We don’t like to get involved in politics,” Sujith said. To this day the politico hasn’t come to see Sujith or compensated him.

The UNP member was remanded the following morning when he surrendered to the Nittambuwa police, after a complaint was lodged with the police. He was later admitted himself to the Watupitiwela hospital claiming he had a headache.Acting Magistrate Siripala Pathirana visited the hospital and granted bail to the suspect. The case is scheduled to be taken up on August 8.
