The new Pilot Station of the Colombo Port Expansion Project (CPEP) will be declared open by President Mahinda Rajapaksa on August 5. The event marks the commencement of operations at the South Terminal of the new Colombo port that is being built as a joint venture between the Sri Lanka Ports Authority and China Merchants Holdings (International) Co. Ltd. Three new terminals to be constructed with a draft of 18 metres will enable mega ships to dock in Colombo, making the port competitive with major shipping hubs, port authorities say.
