A ‘bogus’ white van packed with armed men who abducted known drug dealers and later released them on a ransom payment, was busted by police intelligence at Mawaramandiya in Polonaruwa yesterday night.

The five-member gang led by a serving Army Sgt. Major was picked up in a sting operation following a tip-off from an individual who had a visit from the same van, Inspector (IP) G.S. Sanjeewa Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Polonnaruwa police said.

Two pistols, several hand grenades, a pair of handcuffs and knives were also recovered from the gang which had been in operation for the past six months, IP Sanjeewa added.The gang was busted after an individual who was abducted and later released on a pledge to pay a ransom of Rs 500,000. “Instead, the man took up the matter with the local police who laid a trap and apprehended the suspects,” he said.
