COPE report to House on Tuesday

Recommendations to strengthen the powers of the Auditor General (AG) will be included in the report of the Parliamentary Committee on Public Enterprise (COPE) which will be presented to Parliament on Tuesday, its Chairman Minister D.E.W.Gunasekera said. The Report will also recommend that the salary of Rs. 48, 940 paid at present to the Auditor General be substantially increased in keeping with the vital role played by the AG in ensuring accountability in the State sector.

The Committee has made a total of 20 recommendations after examining the accounts of 247 State institutions. “The Report will be the most comprehensive to be presented to the House so far,” Minister Gunasekera said. Meanwhile the Committee recently took the unprecedented measure of directing the Auditor General of examine the accounts of the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) after news of the import of contaminated oil was exposed in the media.

The report of this probe was handed over to Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa recently. “We have handed over the report and it is up to the executive to now act,” he said. The Minister also said that COPE will present quarterly reports to Parliament from now on following which they will be debated in the House.

The last COPE report was presented to the House in December 2011.
